Direct Resource (正印) in a BaZi Chart

Updated October 26, 2026

Direct Resource in BaZi (正印) is one of the Ten Gods: any stem in the chart whose element produces the Day Master and whose polarity is opposite to its own. It is the most "caring" of the gods: systematic learning, mentors, support that comes without conditions, and inner calm. Translations sometimes call it "Resource" or "Seal" as a group name; the Bazi.uz guide uses Direct Resource. The overall scheme is explained in The Ten Gods.

The essence: relationship to the Day Master

In the producing cycle Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water and Water produces Wood. The element that produces the Day Master is its Resource. With the same polarity it is Indirect Resource; with the opposite polarity it is Direct Resource. Opposite polarity brings "attraction": support flows naturally and evenly, which is why Direct Resource is associated with education, qualifications, a reputation for reliability and the ability to accept help.

In BaZi the year begins at Lichun (around 4 February), so the "years" column applies from that date. Direct Resource can also sit among the Hidden Stems: for example, Gui is hidden in 丑 and 辰.

Direct Resource in the pillars of the chart

The position shows where support tends to come from. More on the pillars in The Palaces of the Chart.

  • Year pillar — the outer context and the family line. The tradition reads this as early support from family and elders, and a value placed on education from childhood.
  • Month pillar — environment and work. An inclination towards structured study, earning qualifications and roles where trust, experience and the ability to explain matter; towards environments that have mentors.
  • Day pillar — the day branch is called the spouse palace. The tradition links Direct Resource there with care and mutual support in close relationships.
  • Hour pillar — projects, plans, later life. A tendency to keep learning throughout life and to pass knowledge on.

When there is a lot, a little or none

In the strength assessment, Resource counts as support: it nourishes the Day Master. So the rule here is the reverse of the one for Wealth and Power.

  • Day Master leaning weak. Direct Resource is usually among the favourable elements, together with the Day Master's own element. It matters especially when Power is strong: Power produces Resource, Resource produces the Day Master, and pressure turns into support.
  • Day Master leaning strong. A lot of Resource is described as an excess of care and preparation: it is comfortable to study and lean on others, harder to act independently and bring results into the open. Output, Wealth and Power are then favourable.
  • Close to balanced. The assessment is ambiguous and schools read it differently; the two scarcest elements of the chart are treated as favourable.

When a chart has no Direct Resource, that does not mean an absence of support. Usually the person relies more on themselves, on Friend and Rob Wealth, or on Indirect Resource. But if Resource is missing while the Day Master is weak, the favourable element is scarce in the chart — and the periods that bring it read as especially valuable for learning and restoring strength.

Day Master:甲Jia, Yang WoodStrength: leaning weak

In the example the Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood), and its Direct Resource is Gui 癸. Gui appears in the chart neither as a visible nor as a hidden stem: Water is represented only by the hidden Ren in 申 (0.5 in the element balance). Yet Water is a favourable element for a weak Day Master, so the absence of Direct Resource is one of the key features of this chart.

In a Luck Pillar and an annual pillar

When the Direct Resource stem arrives in a Luck Pillar, the decade is often coloured by themes of study, qualifications, mentoring and leaning on people close to you. For a weak Day Master such a period is favourable for learning, gaining recognised knowledge and quietly building up strength; for a strong one it is worth keeping in mind a tendency towards passivity and over-preparation.

In the guide's example chart (a Jia Day Master, leaning weak), Direct Resource Gui arrived as the visible stem of the 癸未 Luck Pillar (ages 16–26) — of the six decades shown, it is the only one where the missing favourable element stood in plain view. Annual pillars bring it briefly: 2032, 壬子, as the main qi of the 子 branch, and 2033, 癸丑, as the visible stem.

It also matters in what form Resource arrives in a Luck Pillar. As a visible stem its theme is noticeable at once; as the main qi of the branch it shows up more evenly and for longer; as a minor hidden stem it sounds in the background. If the Luck Pillar branch also clashes with a branch of the chart, the tradition reads the period as a time of rebuilding one's supports: earlier sources of help give way to new ones.

An annual pillar acts more briefly. For example, 2027, the 丁未 year, brings Direct Resource to a Wu Day Master as the visible stem 丁, to a Geng Day Master as the main qi of the 未 branch, and to a Bing Day Master as the hidden Yi 乙. This is the tone of the year, not a promise of events.

Resource in male and female charts

In a man's and a woman's chart Direct Resource is read the same way: the mother and those who look after and teach a person, support, systematic learning, inner stability. The tradition draws no separate gender differences for Resource. Those come only from other gods: in a man's chart Wealth is traditionally linked with the wife, in a woman's chart Power with the husband, and in a woman's chart Output with children. So a Bazi.uz reading draws no conclusions about marriage or children from Direct Resource — only about how a person learns, accepts help and recovers their strength.

Frequently asked questions

Does Direct Resource mean higher education?

No. It is a type of relationship to support and knowledge: the ability to learn systematically, accept help and rely on experience. Having Direct Resource does not point to a particular degree or level of education.

How is Direct Resource different from Indirect Resource?

Direct Resource means systematic learning, care and steady support. Indirect Resource means self-study, unconventional knowledge and intuition. The difference lies in polarity relative to the Day Master.

Can there be too much Direct Resource?

Yes, if the Day Master is leaning strong. The tradition then describes an excess of care and preparation, and the favourable gods are those through which strength flows outward: Output, Wealth and Power.

How can I tell whether my chart has Direct Resource?

Find the Direct Resource stem for your Day Master in the table above and check the visible stems of the year, month and hour, as well as the Hidden Stems of every branch. The Bazi.uz chart page labels the god above each stem, so there is no need to count by hand.
