Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars

Updated October 26, 2026

A birth chart never changes: its eight characters describe the moment of birth once and for all. But BaZi also has a moving part — the Luck Pillars (大运) and the annual pillars (流年). These are periods that overlay the chart and show which elements and gods come to the foreground in a given decade and a given year. The name "luck" is traditional: it is not about good or bad luck, but about the changing backdrop against which the chart lives.

What a Luck Pillar is

A Luck Pillar is a "stem + branch" pair, just like the pillars of the chart. Each one is active for ten years. The sequence of Luck Pillars starts from the month pillar of birth and moves through the sixty-pair cycle — either forward or backward.

The direction depends on the polarity of the year stem and on gender:

  • a Yang year stem and a man, or a Yin year stem and a woman — forward, towards the following month pillars;
  • in all other cases — backward, towards the preceding ones.

This is why a brother and a sister born in the same year have Luck Pillars running in opposite directions.

How the starting age is calculated

The first Luck Pillar does not begin at birth but a few years later. The starting age is calculated like this: take the number of days from birth to the nearest seasonal node — forward or backward, according to the direction — and divide it by three. Three days correspond to one year, one day to four months, and one hour to five days. The result is rounded to months and shown as "from N years M months".

The seasonal nodes are the twelve boundaries of the solar months: Li Chun (Start of Spring), Jingzhe, Qingming and the others. For more on why BaZi measures time by the solar seasons, see the article What Is BaZi.

Which pillar is current

The current Luck Pillar is chosen by exact age on the date of calculation, not by calendar year. If the pillars begin at 7 years 4 months, the second pillar begins at 17 years 4 months, the third at 27 years 4 months, and so on. The Bazi.uz screen shows the current pillar, the previous one and the next two.

In the example, the Luck Pillars run forward from the month pillar 辛巳 and begin at 6 years; the current one is 乙酉 (ages 36–46), and the annual pillars are 丙午 (2026), 丁未 (2027) and 戊申 (2028).

Annual pillars

Every year also has its own pillar, following the sixty-pair cycle from one Li Chun to the next. 2026 is 丙午, 2027 is 丁未, 2028 is 戊申. The annual pillar is the same for everyone, but it means something different for each chart: the year stem receives a god relative to the Day Master, and the year branch may clash with the branches of the chart. Bazi.uz shows the annual pillars for the current year and the following two.

How to read the current period

  1. Find the current Luck Pillar and see which god its stem is for your Day Master. This is the main theme of the decade: Resource — learning and support; Eating God and Hurting Officer — self-expression and creating a product; Wealth — resources and practical results; Officer — responsibility and boundaries; Friend and Rob Wealth — self-reliance and competition. The table of gods is in the article The Ten Gods.
  2. Look at the elements of the pillar. If they match the favourable elements of the chart, the period is usually read as favourable for the corresponding tasks; if they strengthen what is already abundant, it is read as a period that calls for caution and balance. For more on favourable elements, see the article The Five Elements in a Chart.
  3. Check the branch. The branch of a Luck Pillar may clash with the branches of the chart. A clash is read as movement in the areas of life of the pillar involved: a change of environment, a rebuilding of familiar routines.
  4. Add the years. The annual pillar is a shorter wave on top of the decade. A year that repeats a favourable element is usually good for active steps; a year that strengthens an excess is better suited to refining and consolidating.

An example reading

In the example chart, the Day Master is 甲, a weak Wood; the favourable elements are Water and Wood. The current Luck Pillar is 乙酉 (ages 36–46): the stem 乙 is Rob Wealth, the same element, giving support through one's circle and through comparison with others; the branch 酉 is Metal, Direct Officer — rules and responsibility. The decade reads as a period when the person relies on themselves and their circle while working in an environment with clear demands. The previous pillar, 甲申, carried the same theme more sharply: Friend in the stem and Seven Killings in the branch.

The year 2026 (丙午) brings a lot of Fire — the Eating God for Wood. For a weak chart this is a year of high visibility and heavy expenditure of energy: favourable for showing results, but it calls for protecting one's base of support. The year 2028 (戊申) brings Earth and Metal — Wealth and Officer, the theme of practical results and responsibility.

What the periods do not say

Luck Pillars and years describe the backdrop and the emphasis, not events. A Bazi.uz reading does not name dates of "meetings", "losses" or "successful deals" and gives no financial advice. Phrasing such as "the period is favourable for…" and "it is worth taking into account…" is a deliberate choice: the chart speaks of tendencies, and the person makes the decisions.

Clashes with periods

The branch of a Luck Pillar or a year can form one of the six clashes with the branches of the chart: Zi–Wu, Chou–Wei, Yin–Shen, Mao–You, Chen–Xu, Si–Hai. In the example chart, the day branch 申 clashes with the hour branch 寅; a year with the branch 申 (for instance 2028, 戊申) repeats this tension, while a year with the branch 寅 activates it from the other side. More in the article on the annual pillar. In a reading, such years are described as a time of movement in the corresponding areas: close relationships, social circle, familiar routines. This is not a warning of difficulties, but an indication of where change is more likely.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my first Luck Pillar begin at 9 while a friend's begins at 2? The starting age depends on how close to a seasonal node the birth took place. A birth right at the boundary of a month gives an early start; a birth in the middle of the month gives a late one.

Why do I need to specify gender? Only for the direction of the Luck Pillars. The chart itself — the pillars, the Day Master, the balance — does not depend on gender.

What does the transition between pillars mean? The year in which the Luck Pillar changes is often felt as a time of restructuring: the theme of the old decade fades while the new one is only gaining strength. A reading describes this as a transitional period.
