Indirect Resource (偏印) in a BaZi Chart

Updated October 26, 2026

Indirect Resource in BaZi (偏印) is one of the Ten Gods: any stem in the chart whose element produces the Day Master and whose polarity matches its own. Like the whole Resource group, it nourishes the Day Master — not "by the textbook", but in its own way: through unconventional knowledge, self-study, intuition and narrow specialisation. The overall scheme is explained in The Ten Gods.

The essence: relationship to the Day Master

In the producing cycle Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water and Water produces Wood. The element that produces the Day Master is its Resource. With the opposite polarity it is Direct Resource: systematic education, care, reliable support. With the same polarity it is Indirect Resource: support without the "attraction" of opposites, more selective and idiosyncratic. It is associated with depth of knowledge rather than breadth.

In BaZi the year begins at Lichun (around 4 February), so the "years" column applies from that date. Indirect Resource often hides among the Hidden Stems: for example, Ren is a secondary stem in 申.

Indirect Resource in the pillars of the chart

The position shows where the resource tends to come from and where it is put to use. More on the pillars in The Palaces of the Chart.

  • Year pillar — the outer context and the family line. The tradition reads this as an early acquaintance with unusual knowledge, a craft or the views of elders that differ from the mainstream.
  • Month pillar — environment and work. An inclination towards tasks that call for expertise, research, analysis and work with non-obvious data, and towards learning new fields on one's own.
  • Day pillar — the day branch is called the spouse palace. The tradition links Indirect Resource there with a need for personal space and for understanding without many words.
  • Hour pillar — projects, plans, later life. An interest in in-depth pursuits "for oneself", in things that require long immersion.

When there is a lot, a little or none

In the strength assessment, Resource counts as support: it nourishes the Day Master. So the rule here is the reverse of the one for Wealth and Power.

  • Day Master leaning weak. Resource is usually among the favourable elements: knowledge, mentors and calm preparation replenish strength. It is especially valuable when the chart holds a lot of Power — Resource turns pressure into support.
  • Day Master leaning strong. A lot of Resource is described as an excess of preparation: a tendency to study, think things over and put off going public. Output, Wealth and Power are then treated as favourable.
  • Close to balanced. The assessment is ambiguous and schools read it differently; the two scarcest elements of the chart are treated as favourable.

Indirect Resource has a well-known traditional storyline: it controls Eating God. When both are strong, classical texts say that Indirect Resource "steals" Eating God — inner work gets in the way of calm, contented expression. In a modern reading this is the tension between "think about it a little more" and "show it already". Wealth, in turn, controls Resource and helps turn knowledge into practice. When there is no Indirect Resource, the person usually relies on Direct Resource or on their own element rather than on an unconventional resource.

Day Master:甲Jia, Yang WoodStrength: leaning weak

In the example the Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood), and its Indirect Resource is Ren 壬. There is no visible Ren in the chart: it is a secondary stem in the day branch 申. Water is the chart's only Resource and a favourable element for a weak Day Master, so its near absence stands out.

In a Luck Pillar and an annual pillar

When the Indirect Resource stem arrives in a Luck Pillar, the decade is often coloured by themes of study, rethinking, specialisation and the search for one's own method. For a weak Day Master such a period is favourable for learning, replenishing resources and working with a mentor; for a strong one it is worth keeping in mind the tendency to get stuck in preparation.

In the guide's example chart (a Jia Day Master, leaning weak), Ren arrived as the visible stem of the first Luck Pillar 壬午 (ages 6–16) and comes back as the main qi of the 亥 branch in the 丁亥 pillar (56–66). For such a chart these are the periods when the scarce favourable element is replenished from outside.

It also matters in what form Resource arrives in a Luck Pillar. As a visible stem its theme is noticeable at once; as the main qi of the branch it shows up more evenly and for longer; as a minor hidden stem it sounds in the background. If the Luck Pillar branch also clashes with a branch of the chart, the tradition reads the period as a time to change method: the person leaves a habitual way of learning and looks for a new one.

An annual pillar acts more briefly. For example, 2027, the 丁未 year, brings Indirect Resource to a Ji Day Master as the visible stem 丁, to a Xin Day Master as the main qi of the 未 branch, and to a Ding Day Master as the hidden Yi 乙. This is the tone of the year, not a promise of events.

Resource in male and female charts

In a man's and a woman's chart Indirect Resource is read the same way: the mother and those who look after and teach a person, unconventional knowledge, self-study, inner stability. The tradition draws no separate gender differences for Resource. Those come only from other gods: in a man's chart Wealth is traditionally linked with the wife, in a woman's chart Power with the husband, and in a woman's chart Output with children. So a Bazi.uz reading draws no conclusions about marriage or children from Indirect Resource — only about how a person seeks knowledge, rethinks experience and recovers their strength.

Frequently asked questions

Is Indirect Resource an unfavourable god?

No. Its old nickname, "the owl" (枭), reflects its unusual nature, not harm. For a weak Day Master Indirect Resource is a resource; it becomes excessive with a strong Day Master or in combination with a strong Eating God.

How is Indirect Resource different from Direct Resource?

Direct Resource means systematic education, care and support "by the rules". Indirect Resource means self-study, unconventional knowledge, intuition and narrow expertise. The difference lies in polarity relative to the Day Master.

What does it mean if a chart has almost no Resource?

For a weak Day Master it means the favourable element is scarce in the chart, and its role tends to be taken over by the periods in which it arrives. For a strong one, a lack of Resource usually does not create an imbalance.

Does Indirect Resource point to a particular field of knowledge?

No. It describes a way of learning and relying on knowledge — independently, in depth, by one's own method — rather than a specific discipline. That way of learning can show up in technology, the humanities, a craft or research.
