Seven Killings (七杀) in a BaZi Chart

Updated October 26, 2026

Seven Killings in BaZi (七杀) is one of the Ten Gods: any stem in the chart whose element controls the Day Master and whose polarity matches its own. The name is historical and sounds alarming, but it has nothing to do with violence. Classical texts used "killings" for pressure that arrives without softening: challenge, demands, tough conditions. Some modern translations call the same god "Indirect Officer". The overall scheme is explained in The Ten Gods.

The essence: relationship to the Day Master

In the controlling cycle Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal and Metal controls Wood. The element that controls the Day Master is its Power. With the opposite polarity the god is called Direct Officer: control "by the rules", within clear limits. With the same polarity it is Seven Killings: Yang presses on Yang, Yin on Yin, with no attraction of opposites, so the pressure feels more direct and sharper.

In BaZi the year begins at Lichun (around 4 February), so the "years" column applies from that date. Seven Killings can also sit among the Hidden Stems: for example, Geng is a secondary stem in 巳.

Seven Killings in the pillars of the chart

The position shows where pressure tends to come from and where the ability to work with it shows up. More on the pillars in The Palaces of the Chart.

  • Year pillar — the outer context and the family line. The tradition reads this as an early environment with high demands or strict rules that teaches a person to pull themselves together early.
  • Month pillar — environment and work. A tendency towards high-stakes tasks, competitive settings and roles where decisions must be made quickly and results owned.
  • Day pillar — the day branch is called the spouse palace. The tradition links Seven Killings here with a strong, demanding character of close relationships, where respect for boundaries and direct conversation matter.
  • Hour pillar — projects, plans, later life. An inclination towards ambitious ventures of one's own that set a high bar by themselves.

When there is a lot, a little or none

In the strength assessment, Power counts as drain: it controls the Day Master. So the meaning of Seven Killings depends almost entirely on strength.

  • Day Master leaning strong. Seven Killings is usually among the favourable elements: pressure becomes energy for action, discipline and resolve. The tradition sees here a capacity to take on difficult tasks.
  • Day Master leaning weak. A lot of Seven Killings is described as a load that wears a person out. Classical texts offer two ways to soften it: Resource "transforms" pressure into support (Power produces Resource, and Resource produces the Day Master), while Eating God restrains Seven Killings. In the simplified Bazi.uz rule, Resource and the Day Master's own element are favourable for a weak Day Master.
  • Close to balanced. The assessment is ambiguous and schools read it differently; the two scarcest elements of the chart are treated as favourable.

When Seven Killings and Direct Officer appear in a chart together, the tradition calls it mixed Power: demands come from different directions and by different rules, and setting priorities matters most. When there is no Seven Killings at all, the theme of outside pressure is usually not a leading one; it may come to the fore in periods when this stem arrives from outside.

Day Master:甲Jia, Yang WoodStrength: leaning weak

In the example the Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood), and its Seven Killings is Geng 庚. Geng stands as the visible stem of the year pillar, as the main qi of the day branch 申 (the spouse palace) and is hidden in 巳 of the month pillar. With a weak Day Master this is the most noticeable load in the chart.

In a Luck Pillar and an annual pillar

When the Seven Killings stem arrives in a Luck Pillar, the decade is often coloured by themes of responsibility, competition and being tested. For a strong Day Master such a period is favourable for decisive steps and tasks that call for endurance; for a weak one it is worth keeping the load in mind and leaning on learning, mentors and proven resources.

An annual pillar acts more briefly. For example, 2027, the 丁未 year, brings Seven Killings to a Xin Day Master as the visible stem 丁, to a Gui Day Master as the main qi of the 未 branch, and to a Ji Day Master as the hidden Yi 乙. The 申 branch carries Geng as its main qi, so for a Jia Day Master the 申 years (for example 2028, 戊申) bring Seven Killings even when the year stem is different. This is the tone of the year, not an event.

Male and female charts in the tradition

In a woman's chart the Power group is traditionally linked with the spouse, and Seven Killings is sometimes described as a partner with a strong, independent character. In a man's chart Power is traditionally linked with children. This is how the tradition reads it; in a Bazi.uz reading it is used as one factor among others. The core meaning of the god — the relationship to pressure, demands and challenge — is the same for any chart.

Frequently asked questions

Is Seven Killings dangerous?

No. The name is historical and describes pressure and demands, not a threat. For a strong Day Master it is often useful energy; for a weak one it is a load balanced by Resource and the Day Master's own element.

How is Seven Killings different from Direct Officer?

Direct Officer means limits, rules and recognised status. Seven Killings means challenge without softening, high stakes and the ability to act in tough conditions. The difference lies in polarity relative to the Day Master.

Why do some books give this god a different name?

Translations vary: you may see "Indirect Officer" or simply "the Seven". Bazi.uz uses one name — Seven Killings — in every section so that the chart, the reading and the guide match.

What softens Seven Killings in a chart?

Classical texts name two ways: Resource, which turns pressure into support for the Day Master, and Eating God, which restrains Seven Killings. A Bazi.uz reading takes into account whether these gods are present in the chart and in the current periods, and how strong the Day Master itself is.
