Hidden Stems and Earthly Branches

Updated October 26, 2026

Each of the twelve Earthly Branches has an element of its own: Zi is Water, Yin is Wood, Wu is Fire, and so on. But in BaZi a branch is not a single sign — it is a container. Inside it, one to three Heavenly Stems are "hidden": these are the Hidden Stems (藏干). That is why a chart of eight visible characters actually contains more elements than it first appears to. If you have not yet looked at what a pillar is made of, start with the article The Four Pillars.

Why branches have Hidden Stems

Branches describe the seasons and the hours of the day, and time is always in transition. The Yin month is the start of spring: Wood is already gaining strength, yet the warmth of Fire and the stability of Earth are still present. The Hidden Stems capture this mixed nature. The "storage" branches — Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei — are especially rich: they close the seasons and hold the remnants of several elements.

The Hidden Stems table

The main qi (the principal element of the branch) is listed first:

BranchHidden Stems
子 Zi癸 Gui
丑 Chou己 Ji, 癸 Gui, 辛 Xin
寅 Yin甲 Jia, 丙 Bing, 戊 Wu
卯 Mao乙 Yi
辰 Chen戊 Wu, 乙 Yi, 癸 Gui
酉 You辛 Xin
戌 Xu戊 Wu, 辛 Xin, 丁 Ding
亥 Hai壬 Ren, 甲 Jia

The four "pure" branches — Zi, Mao, You and, in the simplified listing, Wu — carry one or two elements. The rest are mixed.

Main qi and weights

Hidden Stems do not all carry the same weight. The main qi sets the principal element of the branch and, in the count, weighs as much as a visible Heavenly Stem — 1. The other Hidden Stems weigh 0.5. These weights are used both for the balance of elements and for assessing the strength of the Day Master. For more on the count, see the article The Five Elements in a Chart.

In the example, the hour branch 寅 holds 甲, 丙 and 戊; the month branch 巳 holds 丙, 庚 and 戊; the year branch 午 holds 丁 and 己; the day branch 申 holds 庚, 壬 and 戊. The main qi is marked separately in the chart.

Hidden Stems and the Ten Gods

Every Hidden Stem, like a visible one, receives its own god relative to the Day Master. So a chart can contain gods that do not appear in the top row: Wealth, for example, can be "hidden" in the month branch. In a Bazi.uz reading, such a god is mentioned where it matters for the conclusion — hidden Wealth is usually read as a resource that needs to be consciously developed, rather than something lying on the surface.

Roots of the Day Master

If the element of the Day Master appears among the Hidden Stems of the branches, the Day Master is said to be "rooted" (通根). A root is a source of support: a stem with roots is more stable, even when the season does not favour it. In the Bazi.uz method, a root in the main qi adds more to the strength assessment than a root in a secondary Hidden Stem. For example, for a 甲 Day Master, the branch 寅 with main qi 甲 is a strong root, while the branch 亥, where 甲 is secondary, is a weaker one.

Clashes between branches

Branches also interact with each other. Version 1 of the method takes into account the six clashes — pairs of opposite branches: Zi–Wu, Chou–Wei, Yin–Shen, Mao–You, Chen–Xu, Si–Hai. A clash in the chart is read as tension between the areas of life represented by the pillars involved: for example, between the day branch and the year branch — between personal space and the outside environment. It is not a sign of trouble but a pointer to dynamics: such areas of life are rarely static.

Combinations and three-branch unions are shown for reference, without interpretation. Punishments and other interactions are not used in the first version of the method.

How it looks on screen

In a Bazi.uz chart, a list of Hidden Stems is shown under each pillar: the character, its name, its god relative to the Day Master and a "main qi" mark. When reading a chart, it helps to go through the branches and note three things: whether the element of the Day Master is among the Hidden Stems (roots), which gods are hidden in the month branch (environment and work), and what is hidden in the day branch (close relationships).

An example of reading the branches

In the example chart, the month branch 巳 holds 丙 (main qi), 庚 and 戊. For a 甲 Day Master these are Eating God, Seven Killings and Indirect Wealth: a working environment where it matters to express yourself, to withstand demands and to manage resources. The hour branch 寅 holds 甲 — the same element as the Day Master: this is a root, a source of support that softens the weakness of the chart. The day branch 申 holds 庚 (main qi), 壬 and 戊 — Seven Killings, Indirect Resource and Indirect Wealth: in the spouse palace demands and support stand side by side, and 壬 is the only Water in the chart. The year branch 午 holds 丁 and 己 — Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth.

The chart has four visible stems, but eleven once the hidden ones are counted; without the branches the picture would be half as rich, and the root of the Day Master in the hour branch would go unnoticed.

Branches and animals

The twelve branches correspond to animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Popular calendars name the years after them, but in BaZi the animal is simply a convenient name for the branch. Interpretation is built on the elements and the Hidden Stems, not on animal symbolism: the "year of the Horse" in a chart is the branch 午 with Fire and Earth inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Hidden Stems differ between books? For some branches, traditions disagree on the secondary stems, especially for 午 and 亥. Bazi.uz uses a single table, the one shown above, in all of its calculations.

Can a chart be read without the Hidden Stems? It can, but the picture will be incomplete: some gods and roots will go unnoticed, and the balance of elements will be distorted.

Why do some branches hold one hidden stem while 寅 and 申 in the example hold three? Mid-season branches (子, 卯, 午, 酉) are almost "pure": the element of the season is at full strength in them. Branches at the start of a season carry the emerging element plus remnants of the previous one, and the storage branches at the end of a season hold a mix of three elements.

How do Hidden Stems affect the Luck Pillars? The branch of a Luck Pillar is read the same way, through its Hidden Stems: a decade can bring an element that is not on the surface of the chart but is present inside its branches — and then that element "comes alive".
