Direct Officer (正官) in a BaZi Chart
Updated October 26, 2026
Direct Officer in BaZi (正官) is one of the Ten Gods: any stem in the chart whose element controls the Day Master and whose polarity is opposite to its own. It is the god of rules, responsibility and recognition — of what gives a person structure from outside while arriving without harsh pressure. Older translations call it simply "the Officer"; the Bazi.uz guide uses Direct Officer. The overall scheme is explained in The Ten Gods.
The essence: relationship to the Day Master
In the controlling cycle Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal and Metal controls Wood. The element that controls the Day Master is its Power. With the same polarity it is Seven Killings; with the opposite polarity it is Direct Officer. Opposite polarity softens the control: Yang and Yin attract each other, so Direct Officer is described as limits that a person accepts — discipline, reputation, agreements, a role within a system.
| Day Master | Direct Officer | Branches where it is the main qi | Years with this stem (last digit) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia 甲 (Yang Wood) | Xin 辛 (Yin Metal) | 酉 | 1 (2031) |
| Yi 乙 (Yin Wood) | Geng 庚 (Yang Metal) | 申 | 0 (2030) |
| Bing 丙 (Yang Fire) | Gui 癸 (Yin Water) | 子 | 3 (2033) |
| Ding 丁 (Yin Fire) | Ren 壬 (Yang Water) | 亥 | 2 (2032) |
| Wu 戊 (Yang Earth) | Yi 乙 (Yin Wood) | 卯 | 5 (2035) |
| Ji 己 (Yin Earth) | Jia 甲 (Yang Wood) | 寅 | 4 (2034) |
| Geng 庚 (Yang Metal) | Ding 丁 (Yin Fire) | 午 | 7 (2027) |
| Xin 辛 (Yin Metal) | Bing 丙 (Yang Fire) | 巳 | 6 (2036) |
| Ren 壬 (Yang Water) | Ji 己 (Yin Earth) | 丑, 未 | 9 (2029) |
| Gui 癸 (Yin Water) | Wu 戊 (Yang Earth) | 辰, 戌 | 8 (2028) |
In BaZi the year begins at Lichun (around 4 February), so the "years" column applies from that date. Direct Officer can also sit among the Hidden Stems: for example, Xin is hidden in 丑 and 戌.
Direct Officer in the pillars of the chart
The position shows in which area limits and responsibility sound strongest. More on the pillars in The Palaces of the Chart.
- Year pillar — the outer context and the family line. The tradition reads this as a family setting with clear rules and a respect for order learned early.
- Month pillar — the classic place for Direct Officer: environment and work. It often shows up as an inclination towards structured organisations, roles with a clear area of responsibility, and valuing reputation and agreements.
- Day pillar — the day branch is called the spouse palace. The tradition links Direct Officer there with respect, keeping agreements and a wish for a clear role within the couple.
- Hour pillar — projects, plans, later life. A tendency to bring one's own ventures to a recognised, formalised state.
When there is a lot, a little or none
In the strength assessment, Power counts as drain: it controls the Day Master. So whether Direct Officer helps depends on strength.
- Day Master leaning strong. Direct Officer is usually among the favourable elements: limits give the strength direction, and responsibility and recognition come naturally.
- Day Master leaning weak. A lot of Power is described as a burden of obligations and other people's expectations. Classical texts soften it with Resource: Power produces Resource, and Resource nourishes the Day Master. In the simplified Bazi.uz rule, Resource and the Day Master's own element are favourable for a weak Day Master.
- Close to balanced. The assessment is ambiguous and schools read it differently; the two scarcest elements of the chart are treated as favourable.
Direct Officer has two traditional "neighbours". Hurting Officer controls it: when both are strong, a tendency to argue with the rules runs into a need for them. Wealth produces Power: results and resources back up status. If a chart holds both Direct Officer and Seven Killings, the tradition speaks of mixed Power — demands arrive under different rules. When there is no Direct Officer, the theme of outer limits is usually not a leading one: the person more often sets their own rules or lives without a rigid structure.
Day Master:甲Jia, Yang WoodStrength: leaning weak
In the example the Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood), and its Direct Officer is Xin 辛, the visible stem of the month pillar. Next to it, in the year pillar, stands Geng — Seven Killings — so the chart holds both direct and indirect Power. The current Luck Pillar 乙酉 (36–46) brings Xin again as the main qi of the 酉 branch.
In a Luck Pillar and an annual pillar
When the Direct Officer stem arrives in a Luck Pillar, the decade is often coloured by themes of responsibility, one's role in a system, reputation and formal commitments. For a strong Day Master such a period is favourable for formalising status and for long agreements; for a weak one it is worth keeping the load in mind and leaning on learning and support.
In the guide's example chart (a Jia Day Master, leaning weak), the current Luck Pillar 乙酉 brings Xin as the main qi of the 酉 branch — the same Direct Officer that already stands in the month pillar. The theme of responsibility sounds louder in such a decade, while Resource, which the chart barely has, remains a favourable element.
An annual pillar acts more briefly. For example, 2027, the 丁未 year, brings Direct Officer to a Geng Day Master as the visible stem 丁, to a Ren Day Master as the main qi of the 未 branch, and to a Wu Day Master as the hidden Yi 乙. When Power arrives through both stem and branch, the theme of the year sounds more clearly. This is the tone of a period, not a promise of events.
Male and female charts in the tradition
In a woman's chart Direct Officer is traditionally linked with the spouse — it is the classical marker of a partner. In a man's chart the Power group is traditionally linked with children. This is how the tradition reads it; in a Bazi.uz reading it is used as one factor among others. The core meaning of the god — the relationship to rules, responsibility and recognition — is the same for any chart.
Frequently asked questions
Does Direct Officer mean a management position?
No. It is a type of relationship to limits: the ability to work by the rules, keep one's word and carry responsibility. Such tasks exist in any position, and having Direct Officer does not point to a specific career.
How is Direct Officer different from Seven Killings?
Direct Officer means accepted limits and recognised status, control without harshness. Seven Killings means challenge, pressure and high stakes. The difference lies in polarity relative to the Day Master.
Is it good to have both Direct Officer and Seven Killings in a chart?
It is neither good nor bad. The tradition calls this combination mixed Power and recommends setting priorities between different demands. Much depends on the strength of the Day Master and on whether the chart has Resource.
What if my chart has no Direct Officer?
Nothing in particular: a missing god is not a flaw. The theme of limits and status tends to show up in periods when this stem arrives in a Luck Pillar or in a year.
