Direct Wealth (正财) in a BaZi Chart
Updated October 26, 2026
Direct Wealth in BaZi (正财) is one of the Ten Gods: the name for any stem in the chart whose element the Day Master controls and whose polarity is opposite to its own. It is not "money" in a literal sense but a type of relationship: what a person knows how to manage, what they carry through to a result and keep in order. The overall scheme is explained in The Ten Gods.
The essence: relationship to the Day Master
In the controlling cycle Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal and Metal controls Wood. The element that the Day Master controls is its wealth. If the polarity matches, the god is called Indirect Wealth; if it does not, it is Direct Wealth. Classical texts describe opposite polarity as "attraction": the resource yields calmly, without a struggle, which is why Direct Wealth is associated with regularity, planning and a fair exchange of effort for results.
| Day Master | Direct Wealth | Branches where it is the main qi | Years with this stem (last digit) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia 甲 (Yang Wood) | Ji 己 (Yin Earth) | 丑, 未 | 9 (2029) |
| Yi 乙 (Yin Wood) | Wu 戊 (Yang Earth) | 辰, 戌 | 8 (2028) |
| Bing 丙 (Yang Fire) | Xin 辛 (Yin Metal) | 酉 | 1 (2031) |
| Ding 丁 (Yin Fire) | Geng 庚 (Yang Metal) | 申 | 0 (2030) |
| Wu 戊 (Yang Earth) | Gui 癸 (Yin Water) | 子 | 3 (2033) |
| Ji 己 (Yin Earth) | Ren 壬 (Yang Water) | 亥 | 2 (2032) |
| Geng 庚 (Yang Metal) | Yi 乙 (Yin Wood) | 卯 | 5 (2035) |
| Xin 辛 (Yin Metal) | Jia 甲 (Yang Wood) | 寅 | 4 (2034) |
| Ren 壬 (Yang Water) | Ding 丁 (Yin Fire) | 午 | 7 (2027) |
| Gui 癸 (Yin Water) | Bing 丙 (Yang Fire) | 巳 | 6 (2036) |
In BaZi the year begins at Lichun (around 4 February), so the "years" column applies from that date, not from 1 January. Besides the visible stems, Direct Wealth can hide among the Hidden Stems — for example, Ji is a secondary stem in 午.
Direct Wealth in the pillars of the chart
The position sets the area where the theme shows up most clearly. What each pillar stands for is covered in The Palaces of the Chart.
- Year pillar — the outer context and the family line. The tradition reads this as a habit of order and thrift learned early, or as a family setting that valued stability.
- Month pillar — environment and working style. Here Direct Wealth often shows up as a tendency towards systematic work, accounting, clear commitments and long projects with an even rhythm.
- Day pillar — the day branch is called the spouse palace. Direct Wealth there is linked in the tradition with valuing reliability and everyday order in close relationships.
- Hour pillar — projects, plans, later life. A tendency to build one's own business or savings gradually, step by step.
When there is a lot, a little or none
In the strength assessment, wealth counts as drain: the Day Master spends energy to control its element. That is why the same amount of Direct Wealth reads differently from chart to chart.
- Day Master leaning strong. Wealth is usually among the favourable elements: the strength has somewhere to go, and regular, measurable work comes naturally.
- Day Master leaning weak. The tradition describes a lot of wealth as "resources that are hard to manage": there are more tasks and obligations than energy to meet them. The favourable elements are then Resource and the Day Master's own element, not more wealth.
- Close to balanced. The assessment is ambiguous and schools read it differently; a reading treats the two scarcest elements of the chart as favourable.
The neighbours in the chain of gods matter too. Eating God and Hurting Officer produce wealth: when self-expression is present, results tend to come from one's own product or skill. Wealth in turn produces Power — responsibility and status. Friend and Rob Wealth, by contrast, traditionally "share" wealth: with a weak Day Master they help hold on to it, with a strong one they add competition for the same resource. Finally, wealth controls Resource, so in charts with a great deal of wealth, study and preparation sometimes take a back seat to current tasks.
When a chart has no Direct Wealth at all, that does not mean an absence of income. Usually the theme of order and accounting simply is not the leading one: the person relies on other groups — for example on Indirect Wealth or on Output.
Day Master:甲Jia, Yang WoodStrength: leaning weak
In the example the Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood), and its Direct Wealth is Ji 己. There is no visible Ji in the chart: it is hidden in the 午 branch of the year pillar. For a weak Day Master this is a quiet background rather than a leading theme.
In a Luck Pillar and an annual pillar
When the Direct Wealth stem arrives in a Luck Pillar, the decade is often coloured by themes of structure, planning and practical results. If wealth is a favourable element, the period is favourable for putting things in order and for long commitments; if not, it is worth keeping the load in mind and not taking on more than one's strength allows.
An annual pillar acts more briefly and more softly. For example, 2027, the 丁未 year, brings Direct Wealth to a Jia Day Master as the main qi of the 未 branch — Ji; to a Ren Day Master it comes as the visible stem 丁. In years when wealth arrives through both stem and branch, the theme sounds more clearly than with a hidden stem. This describes the tone of the year, not a promise of events.
Male and female charts in the tradition
Classical texts add family meanings to wealth. In a man's chart, Direct Wealth is traditionally linked with the wife, and wealth in general also with the father. In a woman's chart, wealth is traditionally linked with the father, while the spouse is represented by the Power group. This is how the tradition reads it; in a Bazi.uz reading it is used as one factor among others. The core meaning of the god — the relationship to resources, work and order — is the same for any chart.
Frequently asked questions
Does Direct Wealth mean a lot of money?
No. It is a type of relationship: the ability to manage, to carry things through to a result and to keep order. The amount of wealth in a chart does not equal a level of income, and whether it helps depends on the strength of the Day Master.
How is Direct Wealth different from Indirect Wealth?
Direct Wealth means regularity, planning and steady results. Indirect Wealth means flexibility, projects and an eye for opportunity. The difference lies in polarity relative to the Day Master.
What if my chart has no Direct Wealth?
Nothing special needs to be done: a missing god is not a flaw. The theme tends to show up in the periods when this stem arrives, and the rest of the time the person relies on other groups of gods.
Can Direct Wealth tell me which profession to choose?
Direct Wealth describes a type of task rather than a specific profession: accounting, planning, supporting long processes, working with clear commitments. Such tasks exist in many different fields. A Bazi.uz reading looks at this theme together with the strength of the Day Master and the favourable elements.
