Indirect Wealth (偏财) in a BaZi Chart
Updated October 26, 2026
Indirect Wealth (偏财) in BaZi is the element the Day Master controls, in the same polarity as the Day Master. If you are looking up what indirect wealth means in a BaZi chart, the short answer is: resources that come through flexibility, projects and an eye for opportunity, along with generosity, a wide social circle and practical savvy. Together with Direct Wealth it forms the Wealth group; the overall scheme is in The Ten Gods.
How it relates to the Day Master
The Day Master controls the Wealth element: Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. To control here means "to manage, to work on": a tree holds the soil with its roots. When the polarity matches, the result is Indirect Wealth. For a 甲 (Jia, Yang Wood) Day Master it is 戊 (Wu, Yang Earth); for a 庚 Day Master (Geng, Yang Metal) it is 甲.
| Day Master | Indirect Wealth | Element | Main qi in branches | Also hidden in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The tradition links Direct Wealth with regular, earned income and order, and Indirect Wealth with variable sources: projects, deals, an entrepreneurial streak, the ability to gather people and resources around a task. Indirect Wealth produces Seven Killings: resources bring responsibility and pressure with them. In psychological terms Indirect Wealth describes generosity, ease in company, a taste for movement and change, a willingness to take risks for an opportunity — and sometimes impatience with routine, which Direct Wealth handles better.
Indirect Wealth in the pillars
The position shows the area of life (see the palaces of the chart).
- Year pillar — family line and early years: the tradition sees a family connected with business, trade or wide networks, and an early understanding of what resources cost.
- Month pillar — environment and work. Indirect Wealth in the month often describes a style suited to tasks with variable outcomes: projects, negotiations, developing new lines of work, working with clients.
- Day branch (spouse palace) — Indirect Wealth under the Day Master is traditionally read as a practical, generous view of partnership and an interest in shared ventures and projects as a couple.
- Hour pillar — projects, children, later years: a tendency towards ventures of one's own with a business side, and towards investing time and effort in long-term projects.
When there is a lot of Indirect Wealth, little, or none
Wealth spends the Day Master's strength: controlling also takes effort (the simplified v1 rule).
Day Master leaning strong. Indirect Wealth is a good outlet for energy: there is enough strength to manage resources and take on projects. Unless the chart already has too much of it, Wealth is among the favourable elements. Such a person usually does well where one needs to spot opportunities and take responsibility for results.
Day Master leaning weak. The tradition says "wealth is heavy for the weak". There may be more opportunities than strength to hold on to them, and a tendency to take on many things at once. Resource and one's own element help more; the support of a circle of peers helps "carry" the Wealth.
Plenty of Wealth. Wealth controls Resource, so with an excess of Indirect Wealth the tradition describes a tendency to put practical matters ahead of learning and rest. And for a strong Day Master, the Friend and Rob Wealth compete for the same Wealth.
No Wealth. This does not mean a life without money: the theme of resources simply comes to the fore less often and is usually activated in periods when the Wealth element arrives from outside.
Close to balanced. Schools differ; a Bazi.uz reading relies on the two scarcest elements and checks whether the Wealth element is one of them.
Indirect Wealth in a luck pillar and an annual pillar
When Indirect Wealth arrives in a luck pillar, the decade is usually coloured by resources, projects, business connections and practical decisions. For a strong Day Master such a period is often favourable for expanding one's work and trying new directions. For a weak one it is worth keeping the load in mind: there are more opportunities than strength, and choosing matters.
An annual pillar with Indirect Wealth brings the same theme for a year. For example, 2028 (戊申) brings the visible stem 戊 — Indirect Wealth for a 甲 Day Master — while the main qi of the 申 branch is Seven Killings: the tradition reads this pair as resources together with greater responsibility. This describes the tendencies of a period, not a financial forecast.
Day Master:甲Jia, Yang WoodStrength: leaning weak
In the example the Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood), and its Indirect Wealth is 戊 (Yang Earth). There is no visible 戊 stem, but it is hidden in three branches at once — 寅 (hour), 申 (spouse palace) and 巳 (month). The Day Master is leaning weak, so here Wealth is more of a load than a support.
Male and female charts
This is how the tradition reads it; in a Bazi.uz reading it is used as one factor among others. For both sexes Indirect Wealth is traditionally linked with the father. In a man's chart Wealth as a whole also symbolises the wife; some schools assign Direct Wealth to the wife and Indirect Wealth to the romantic sphere in general. In a woman's chart Wealth produces Power, which the tradition links with the husband, so Indirect Wealth also reads as support for that "star". This is a traditional scheme of roles, not a judgement of anyone's relationships.
Frequently asked questions
Is Indirect Wealth easy money?
No. The name describes the character of the resources — variable, tied to projects and opportunities — not how easily they come. Like any Wealth, it takes the Day Master's strength.
How is Indirect Wealth different from Direct Wealth?
Both are the element the Day Master controls. Indirect Wealth shares its polarity and describes flexible sources and projects; Direct Wealth has the opposite polarity and describes regular income, order and reliability.
Why is Wealth "heavy" for a weak Day Master?
Controlling the Wealth element takes strength. If the Day Master is leaning weak, it is harder to hold on to resources and commitments, so the tradition puts Resource and one's own element first.
What does it mean if Indirect Wealth appears only among the Hidden Stems?
The theme is present in the chart but expressed more quietly: it shows through the relevant palace and is activated in periods when the Wealth element arrives as a visible stem.
