The Ren 壬 Day Master — Yang Water
Updated October 26, 2026
The Ren day master (壬) is Yang Water, the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar in a BaZi chart. If your day pillar carries 壬, every other character in the chart is read in relation to it: what feeds it, what channels it, what holds it back, and which relationships — the Ten Gods — it forms with the stems and branches. Below are the stem's image, its behaviour across the four seasons, strength and favourable elements, typical surroundings, the spouse palace, work and common reading mistakes. The general principles are in the article Day Master.
The image: the sea and the great river
Ren is the elder, Yang form of Water. The tradition describes it as the sea, a great river, a strong current. Ren water moves, gathers volume, flows around obstacles and cuts its own channel. Great water collects tributaries and builds up mass, which is why descriptions of Ren so often carry the themes of reach and accumulation.
In charts with a Ren Day Master this image tends to show up as breadth of interests, a mobile mind, an inclination towards scale and towards working with flows — of information, people and resources. A great river needs a riverbed: without form its energy dissipates, and in excess it becomes hard to manage. Hence the main theme in reading Ren — the relationship between the force of the current and its banks. This describes a tone, not a personality type.
Ren across the four seasons
The birth season (the month branch, 月令) is the main factor in strength. For Water the method's rule works like this: Metal produces Water, so Metal months give +1.5, as do the months of Water itself; Water produces Wood, so Wood months give −0.5; Water controls Fire and Earth controls Water, so Fire and Earth months give −1.5.
| Season | Month branches | Branch element | Adjustment for Ren |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | 寅 Yin, 卯 Mao | Wood | −0.5 |
| 辰 Chen | Earth | −1.5 | |
| Summer | 巳 Si, 午 Wu, 未 Wei | Fire, Fire, Earth | −1.5 |
| Autumn | 申 Shen, 酉 You | Metal | +1.5 |
| 戌 Xu | Earth | −1.5 | |
| Winter | 亥 Hai, 子 Zi | Water | +1.5 |
| 丑 Chou | Earth | −1.5 |
So Ren is supported by the first two months of autumn and of winter, while all four Earth months — 辰, 未, 戌, 丑 — weaken it, even though they formally belong to a "watery" or "metallic" season. Summer is unfavourable for Ren's strength throughout, spring weakens it moderately. Support, drain and roots in the branches are then added to the season: Water is the main qi of 子 and 亥, and a secondary hidden stem in 申, 辰 and 丑.
Leaning strong, leaning weak, close to balanced
Leaning weak Ren. The favourable elements are Resource (Metal) and its own element (Water). In everyday terms: a clear structure and rules, tasks with an understandable order, learning, working with information and with people of one's own circle, a rhythm that leaves time for preparation. A weak Ren usually struggles when the demands exceed the resources to meet them.
Leaning strong Ren. The favourable elements are Wood (Output), Fire (Wealth) and Earth (Power), with priority to whichever the chart has least of. In everyday terms: tasks with a concrete product, developing projects, working towards results, frameworks and responsibility that give the current a shape. A strong Ren without a riverbed tends to scatter its energy.
Close to balanced. The favourable elements are the two scarcest elements in the chart. This is the simplified v1 rule; in borderline cases the schools read the chart differently, and the Bazi.uz reading says so directly.
Ten Gods around Ren
For Ren (Yang Water) the stems fall out like this:
| Stems | God for Ren |
|---|---|
| 壬 / 癸 | Friend / Rob Wealth |
| 甲 / 乙 | Eating God / Hurting Officer |
| 丙 / 丁 | Indirect Wealth / Direct Wealth |
| 戊 / 己 | Seven Killings / Direct Officer |
| 庚 / 辛 | Indirect Resource / Direct Resource |
Three combinations are discussed most often in descriptions of Ren. Wu 戊 — Seven Killings: the mountain and the dam that hold a great river. For a strong Ren this is the classic image of banks that give force a direction; for a weak one it is pressure; more in Seven Killings. Jia 甲 — Eating God: Water nourishes the tree, meaning Ren's energy finds a calm, substantive outlet in a product, an explanation, teaching others. Ding 丁 — Direct Wealth: regular results and order in resources; see Direct Wealth. The tradition treats the pair 丁壬 as a stem combination (into Wood); the Bazi.uz reading does not yet interpret stem combinations.
Ren and the 丁未 year
In 2027 the annual pillar is 丁未. For Ren the stem 丁 is Direct Wealth, the main qi of the 未 branch (Ji) is Direct Officer, and the hidden Yi is Hurting Officer. The tradition reads this as a period favourable for putting resources in order and working within clear frameworks, where a possible tension between one's own opinion and the rules is worth bearing in mind. Details are in the article 2027, the Ding Wei year.
The day pillar as the spouse palace
The day pillar's branch is the spouse palace (夫妻宫). Ren has six possible day pillars: 壬子, 壬寅, 壬辰, 壬午, 壬申, 壬戌. The branch's Hidden Stems describe what a person usually looks for in a partnership. In 壬午 the main qi Ding is Direct Wealth, with Ji, Direct Officer, alongside: traditionally an interest in stability and clear agreements. In 壬子 the branch holds Gui, Rob Wealth: an inclination towards autonomy and equality in the couple. In 壬寅 the main qi Jia is Eating God: shared activities and ease of communication matter. In 壬辰 and 壬戌 the main qi Wu is Seven Killings: the partnership is more often described through mutual expectations and roles. These are general inclinations, not a forecast about relationships. An example of a day with this Day Master is 4 March 1985, day pillar 壬寅.
Work and money
Ren usually comes into its own in tasks with scale and movement: coordination, logistics, handling large volumes of information, negotiation, teaching, research, projects that bridge different fields. With prominent Wood nearby, an authorial product and the ability to explain stand out; with prominent Fire, an interest in resources and results; with prominent Earth, the capacity to hold a structure and take responsibility for processes. For a leaning weak Ren the same tasks usually go more smoothly in a team, relying on proven methods and mentors; for a leaning strong one — when there is autonomy, measurable results and clear limits of responsibility. Money in BaZi is read through Wealth, which for Ren is Fire: Direct Wealth is regular income and order, Indirect Wealth is projects and opportunities. This describes inclinations, not financial advice.
Common reading mistakes
Treating any Water in the chart as support. For a strong Ren, extra Water adds to the flood rather than helping.
Reading a 丑 or 辰 month as "watery". In the season rule these are Earth months (−1.5), even though Gui sits among their Hidden Stems.
Seeing only a threat in Seven Killings. For a strong Ren, 戊 is the riverbank without which the current disperses.
Confusing Ren with Gui. Both are Water, but polarity changes the gods: 戊 is Seven Killings for Ren and Direct Officer for Gui.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ren a strong Day Master?
Not on its own. Strength depends on the birth season, support and drain in the chart, and roots in the branches. Metal and Water months support Ren; summer and the Earth months weaken it the most.
Which elements are favourable for a Ren Day Master?
For leaning weak — Metal and Water; for leaning strong — Wood, Fire and Earth, prioritising whatever the chart lacks most; for close to balanced — the two scarcest elements in the chart.
How does Ren differ from Gui?
Ren is Yang Water, the image of the sea and a great river, scale and movement. Gui is Yin Water, the image of rain and dew, quiet penetration. Because their polarity differs, the same stems give them different Ten Gods.
What does the 丁未 year mean for Ren?
The stem 丁 is Direct Wealth for Ren, the main qi of 未 is Direct Officer and the hidden Yi is Hurting Officer. The tradition links such a year with resources and frameworks; how it plays out depends on the Day Master's strength in the specific chart.
