The Month Pillar in a BaZi Chart
Updated October 26, 2026
The month pillar appears in BaZi in two roles. In the birth chart it is one of the Four Pillars: its branch sets the birth season (月令), the main factor in Day Master strength. And in current time every month also has its own pillar, which overlays the chart and the active periods. This article explains how BaZi months work and how to read the current month without turning it into a general forecast "for everyone".
A BaZi month is solar, not calendar
BaZi months match neither Gregorian nor lunar months. Their boundaries are 12 nodes (节) out of the 24 solar terms (jieqi, 节气): the moments when the Sun passes particular points of ecliptic longitude spaced 30° apart. The first month of the year — the Yin 寅 month — begins at Lichun (立春), around 4 February; after that the months follow the order of the branches: Mao 卯, Chen 辰, Si 巳, Wu 午, Wei 未, Shen 申, You 酉, Xu 戌, Hai 亥, Zi 子 and Chou 丑.
So a solar month usually begins between the 4th and the 8th of a Gregorian month and takes in the end of the previous one. The midpoints of the seasons (中气), such as the equinoxes and solstices, are not month boundaries. The moment of a node is astronomical: in Tashkent it falls at one clock time, in another time zone at a different local time.
The month pillar in the birth chart
In the birth chart the month pillar is one of the four palaces. The tradition links it with the environment a person grows up and works in, with career, siblings and the years of youth. But its main role is technical: the month branch sets the birth season, and more than anything else it decides whether the Day Master is leaning strong or leaning weak. Wood born in a 寅 or 卯 month is supported by the season; the same Wood in a 申 or 酉 month is not. The sequence of Luck Pillars also starts from the month pillar: the first ten-year period is the next or the previous month pillar. More about the palaces in the article on the Four Pillars.

| 丑 | Xiaohan 小寒 | 06.01.2028 00:54 | 癸丑 |
Note that the 辛丑 month starting on 5 January 2027 still belongs to the 丙午 year, and the 癸丑 month from 6 January 2028 belongs to the 丁未 year. The next year, 戊申, begins at Lichun on 04.02.2028 at 12:31. Why the year changes at exactly that moment is explained in the article on the annual pillar.
The Five Tigers rule
The month branch is set by the season, and the stem follows from the year stem by the Five Tigers rule (五虎遁). It names the stem of the first month, 寅 (Tiger); after that the stems run in order.
| Year stem | First 寅 month |
|---|---|
| 甲 Jia or 己 Ji | 丙寅 |
| 乙 Yi or 庚 Geng | 戊寅 |
| 丙 Bing or 辛 Xin | 庚寅 |
| 丁 Ding or 壬 Ren | 壬寅 |
| 戊 Wu or 癸 Gui | 甲寅 |
A check against the tables: the 丙午 year opens with the 庚寅 month, the 丁未 year with 壬寅. In this way all 60 pairs complete a full circle over five years, and after five years the sequence of month pillars repeats.
Three layers: month, Luck Pillar, chart
The current month says almost nothing on its own. It is read as the third and shortest layer:
- The chart — the base: the Day Master, its strength and favourable elements.
- The Luck Pillar — the ten-year backdrop that shifts the element balance; the theme of the annual pillar sits on top of it.
- The month pillar — a short wave within the year.
The questions for a month are the same as for a year. Which god do the stem and the main qi of the month branch represent for the Day Master — see the Ten Gods? Does the month's element match the favourable elements? Does the month branch meet branches of the chart, the year or the Luck Pillar in a clash or combination (Branch Clashes)? If the month repeats the theme of the year and the Luck Pillar, it usually feels more pronounced; if it brings an opposing element, it may soften the year.
An example of the logic: in Fire years and months — say, the 丙午 month in June 2027 — a Day Master for whom Fire is favourable usually finds the period good for visible, public tasks. For a Metal Day Master leaning weak, which Fire controls, the same month is worth treating as a time of heightened demands.
How this differs from a monthly horoscope
A monthly horoscope is usually written for a sign — the same text for a twelfth of all people. BaZi does not work that way. The 丙午 month is Eating God and Hurting Officer for a 甲 Day Master, that is, self-expression; Seven Killings and Direct Officer for 庚, that is, demands and structure; Indirect Resource and Direct Resource for 戊, that is, support and learning. And the differences continue within one Day Master: everyone's chart, Luck Pillar and year are their own.
So a BaZi month cannot be read "for everyone born in the Year of the Horse". It can be read only against your chart and your period — and only as a tendency: what the time favours and where to be more attentive. The month pillar does not describe specific events.
Born near a month boundary
For the birth chart the month boundary matters a great deal: it decides the month branch, and therefore the birth season and the Day Master strength assessment. If you were born within a day of a jieqi node — for example on 4–5 February, 5–7 March or 7–8 October — the month pillar may depend on the hour and minute of birth. In such cases the Bazi.uz reading shows a season boundary warning.
If the birth time is unknown and the date falls on the day a season changes, the year and month pillars are determined by local noon, with a mandatory caveat. More in the article on unknown birth time. An exact birth time and place remove this uncertainty.
