The Friend (比肩) in a BaZi Chart
Updated October 26, 2026
The Friend (比肩, literally "shoulder to shoulder") in BaZi is a stem of the same element and the same polarity as the Day Master. If you are looking up what the friend star means in a BaZi chart, the short answer is: it is the image of someone standing next to you on the same level — a friend, a colleague, a partner, a brother or sister — and also your own capacity to rely on yourself. Together with Rob Wealth, the Friend forms the Companions group; the overall scheme is explained in The Ten Gods.
How it relates to the Day Master
The Friend repeats both the element and the polarity of the Day Master. For a 甲 (Jia, Yang Wood) Day Master the Friend is another 甲; for 丁 (Ding, Yin Fire) it is another 丁. The day stem itself does not count as a Friend: the Friend is every other identical stem in the chart, visible or hidden.
| Day Master | Friend | Main qi in branches | Also hidden in |
|---|---|---|---|
When the Friend is the main qi of a branch, it is also a root of the Day Master: the element is anchored in the chart and holds more steadily. In psychological terms the Friend describes independence, a sense of one's own position, the ability to work with others as equals and to keep one's word to one's own circle.
The Friend in the pillars
The position shows where this theme tends to appear (see the palaces of the chart).
- Year pillar — family line and early years: the tradition sees an environment where one learned to rely on oneself early, or a family that valued equality and mutual help.
- Month pillar — environment, work, brothers and sisters. A Friend here often describes a style in which a person feels most at home among colleagues and partners rather than in a rigid hierarchy.
- Day branch (spouse palace) — a Friend in the branch right under the Day Master reads as a wish for partnership between equals: shared projects, respect for independence, a division of roles without subordination.
- Hour pillar — projects, children, later years: a tendency to run one's own ventures, work with like-minded people and rely on oneself in mature age.
When there is a lot of the Friend, little, or none
The meaning of the Friend depends on Day Master strength (the simplified v1 rule — see the Day Master).
Day Master leaning weak. The Friend is an ally: one's own element is among the favourable elements and helps carry the load of Wealth and Power. Such a person usually copes better in a team, with a partner, with the backing of their own circle.
Day Master leaning strong. There is already enough of one's own element, and an extra Friend deepens the imbalance: a tendency towards stubbornness, difficulty accepting other people's views, competition for the same resources. What helps more is whatever channels energy outward — Output, Wealth, Power.
The neighbouring gods matter too. The Friend controls Wealth (the element the Day Master controls), so for a strong Day Master the tradition speaks of "dividing the wealth": resources and results have to be shared with others or spent on common causes. For a weak Day Master facing strong Power, especially Seven Killings, the Friend helps withstand the pressure: the person is less often left alone with the load. If the Friend is also fed by Resource, there may simply be too much of one's own element.
No Friend. If the chart has no other stems of one's own element (neither Friend nor Rob Wealth) and the Day Master is weak, a supportive circle of peers is usually something built consciously. For a strong Day Master the absence of the Friend is not a problem: support already comes from the season or from Resource.
Close to balanced. Schools differ here; the reading looks at which elements are scarcest in the chart and weighs the Friend together with them.
The Friend in a luck pillar and an annual pillar
When the Day Master's own stem arrives in a luck pillar, the decade is usually coloured by independence: personal projects, partnerships, a wider circle. For a weak Day Master such a period is often favourable for finding one's feet and leaning on allies. For a strong one it is worth keeping in mind a tendency towards rivalry and the need to share common resources.
An annual pillar with the Friend works the same way, but for one year and more gently: a year when friends, colleagues and people "on the same level" play a more visible role. How exactly this lands on a particular chart depends on the favourable elements and on which branches the year branch interacts with.
Day Master:甲Jia, Yang WoodStrength: leaning weak
In the example the Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood). The Friend is 甲 as the main qi of the 寅 branch in the hour pillar, which is also the Day Master's root. The chart is leaning weak, so here the Friend is a support and part of the favourable elements (Wood).
Male and female charts
This is how the tradition reads it; in a Bazi.uz reading it is used as one factor among others. In a man's and a woman's chart the Friend is read the same way: brothers and sisters, friends, colleagues, a circle of equals and self-reliance. The tradition draws no separate gender differences for the Friend. Those come only from other gods: in a man's chart Wealth is traditionally linked with the wife, in a woman's chart Power with the husband, and in a woman's chart Output with children. So a Bazi.uz reading draws no conclusions about marriage from the Friend: a strong Friend with a strong Day Master is described as competition for a shared resource and attention — the same for any chart. This describes roles in a traditional scheme, not a judgement of anyone's relationships.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Friend good or bad?
Neither. For a Day Master leaning weak the Friend is a support and part of the favourable elements; for one leaning strong it is an excess that adds stubbornness and competition. The assessment is always made across the whole chart.
How is the Friend different from Rob Wealth?
Both are one's own element, but the Friend shares the Day Master's polarity and Rob Wealth does not. The tradition describes the Friend as partnership between equals, and Rob Wealth as sharper competition and a drive to do things one's own way.
Does the Day Master itself count as a Friend?
No. The day stem is the point of reference. The Friend is any other stem of the same element and polarity: in the year, month and hour pillars and among the Hidden Stems of the branches.
What does it mean if the Friend is the main qi of a branch?
It is a root of the Day Master: the element is anchored and holds more steadily in the chart. A root adds a bonus in the strength assessment, so such a chart is less often leaning weak.
